Gloomhaven Digital – Trailer
🌟 Review Summary
As longtime fans of the Gloomhaven board game, we were thrilled to see a digital version released. One of our biggest pain points with the physical version was the overwhelming setup time—tracking monster AI, calculating line-of-sight, managing the mountain of components. The digital version solves all of that beautifully. It lets you jump straight into the action and enjoy what makes Gloomhaven shine.
It stays true to the board game rules and structure, which we appreciated. Nothing felt stripped down or reimagined—it’s the same game, just digitized. Sure, there were occasional bugs (missing card visuals, the odd crash), but overall it ran smoothly and felt polished.
🧩 Gameplay & Difficulty – 4/5
This game is not for the impatient. Each map takes at least 20 minutes to complete and requires careful planning and card management. The gameplay loop of picking two cards, using the top half of one and the bottom of the other, along with managing your modifier deck and stamina, was completely new to us—and we loved it.
Strategizing which enemies to prioritize, how to split up the team, and when to burn cards for movement or survival made every decision feel meaningful. Leveling up and building our deck over time gave a constant sense of progression.
We highly recommend playing with four characters total (two each if you’re playing as a duo). While difficulty scales, we found the game far more interesting and enjoyable that way.

👫 Co-op Experience – 4.5/5
Like most co-op games we’ve played, this one was made even better by playing together. Sitting beside each other and coordinating our characters, bouncing strategy ideas back and forth—it really pulled us in.
Turn-based gameplay is a core reason we both enjoy games like this, especially for my wife, who appreciates having time to think and plan moves without being rushed. Every successful combo felt like a win for the team.
If you’re planning to pick this up, you can grab it on Humble Bundle and support the devs (and us!) in the process. We’d be grateful!
🧠 Story, & Character Progression– 3.5/5
The story itself isn’t the strongest point—it’s there, but not deeply compelling. One downside is the lack of voice acting, which makes the experience feel a bit dry. Most of the narrative is delivered through reading, which may not suit every player.
Where Gloomhaven excels is in its sheer amount of content and character progression. The retirement system was especially exciting—we looked forward to unlocking and trying out new classes. Even after saying goodbye to a character we loved, there was always something new and intriguing around the corner.
🎨 Visuals & Audio – 4/5
The graphics are clean and atmospheric—dark dungeons, fiery spells, icy traps—it all feels right. The UI is well-designed for a board-game-turned-digital format. While the audio design was solid, the lack of voice-over for story scenes kept us from being fully immersed.
🕹️ Replayability – 3.5/5
With so many character classes, branching quests, and difficulty scaling, there’s a ton of replay value here. Even when we retired our first characters, it felt like we were only scratching the surface. This game is built to last, especially for players who enjoy complex tactical combat.
We’re also eagerly looking forward to Frosthaven Digital. We’ll likely wait for a few patches before diving in, but it’s definitely on our radar. Until then, Gloomhaven Digital remains a go-to tactical experience.
✅ Pros
- No setup—just jump in and play
- Deep, tactical turn-based combat
- Faithful digital adaptation of the board game
- Exciting character progression and unlocks
- Co-op feels great, especially with 4 total characters
❌ Cons
- Occasional bugs and crashes
- Lots of reading; no voice acting for story
- Can be overwhelming for new players
🧾 Final Verdict – 4/5
Gloomhaven Digital is a faithful and polished adaptation of one of the most complex co-op board games out there. If you enjoy thinking through your every move and working as a team, this one’s for you. It requires patience and planning, but it delivers a satisfying tactical experience in return.
We always looked forward to our next session.
