Dysmantle – Trailer
🌟 Review Summary
Dysmantle drops you into a colourful yet desolate post-apocalyptic world with one key mission: break, loot, and craft your way to freedom. It nails that “just one more item” itch, especially early on, where every level-up unlocks exciting new tools or skills. Unfortunately, by the mid-to-late game, that sense of reward fades—progression slows, and you may find yourself pushing forward mainly to check the “game completed” box rather than out of genuine excitement.
An optional split-screen option for the couch co-op play would have been a better way to experience the game. That way you could each go and do your own thing without needing to stay together all the time. We felt that took away a bit of some of the experience and fun. While it’s mostly a relaxing grind, the lack of a strong central storyline means the experience leans heavily on the gameplay loop—and after dozens of hours, it can feel repetitive.
Still, Dysmantle shines in its moments of discovery: stumbling across a hidden stash, finally crafting that long-awaited upgrade, or clearing a region 100%. It’s perfect for completionists who love methodically ticking boxes in an open world.
🧩 Gameplay & Difficulty – 3/5
The core loop—smash, gather, craft, progress—is instantly satisfying. Leveling early on feels rewarding, with each upgrade opening new paths and breaking limits. However, after a certain point, leveling up provides little tangible benefit, and the grind becomes more about clearing the map than chasing exciting upgrades. Enemy combat is simple and rarely poses a serious challenge, so the difficulty lies more in patience than skill.

👫 Co-op Experience – 4.5/5
While Dysmantle is primarily a single-player experience, the addition of local co-op makes the grind far more enjoyable. Playing side-by-side with my wife turned what could have been a solitary scavenging loop into a shared adventure. Coordinating who smashes which objects, splitting up to cover more ground (within the same screen), and pooling resources kept the pace moving and added moments of light-hearted teamwork.
That said, the fixed camera can be a limitation—since there’s no dynamic split-screen, both players have to stay relatively close. Still, for a game built around calm, methodical exploration, the shared screen worked well enough. If you’ve got a co-op partner who enjoys relaxing, completionist gameplay, Dysmantle can be a cozy choice for a weekend project.
🧠 Story, & Character Progression– 3/5
Dysmantle isn’t about telling a gripping story—it’s about the world you piece together as you go. While there are snippets of lore, the narrative takes a back seat. That works fine for players who care more about gameplay than plot, but for others, the lack of a compelling central story may leave the experience feeling hollow after many hours.
🎨 Visuals & Audio – 4/5
The world has a pleasant, clean art style with enough variety in biomes to keep exploration visually fresh. The soundtrack is minimal but fits the cozy, solitary vibe of the game.
🕹️ Replayability – 2/5
Once you’ve fully explored and crafted everything, there’s little reason to return. The joy lies in that first completionist run, but it’s a long one, so you’ll get plenty of hours before hitting the end.
✅ Pros
- Addictive scavenging and crafting loop
- Great for completionists who love clearing the map
- Pleasant art style and cozy pacing
- Early game progression feels exciting
❌ Cons
- Camera angle could be better
- Repetitive mid-to-late game grind
- Weak central storyline
- Leveling eventually stops feeling rewarding
🧾 Final Verdict – 3.5/5
Dysmantle is a cozy, methodical adventure that’s best enjoyed at a relaxed pace. It starts strong, rewarding you with new tools and abilities that open the world in exciting ways. But the later grind, repetitive tasks, and lack of narrative momentum mean it’s more about the journey than the destination. If you love open-world completionism and don’t mind a touch of monotony, it’s worth dismantling your way through.
